Emergency line answered 24/7. For this concept site, Brightwater is set up as offering 24/7 emergency service. A real company would only say this if it’s true.

What to do right now

If you smell gas, leave the house first and call the gas company’s emergency line or 911 from outside.

Leak or burst pipe

  1. Shut off the main water valve. It’s usually where the water line enters the house, near the meter.
  2. If water is near outlets or appliances, turn off power to that area at the breaker, but only if you can reach it while standing somewhere dry.
  3. Move what you can out of the water and take photos for insurance.

No heat

  1. Check the thermostat is set to Heat and a few degrees above room temperature.
  2. Check the furnace breaker and the switch near the furnace (it looks like a light switch).
  3. In freezing weather, open cabinet doors under sinks on outside walls so pipes don’t freeze.

Strange noise or smell

  1. If you smell gas (rotten eggs), leave the house now. Don’t flip switches. Call your gas utility’s emergency number or 911 from outside.
  2. For a burning smell from the furnace or AC, turn the system off at the thermostat.
  3. For banging pipes or a rumbling water heater, note when it happens. It helps us find the cause.

Sewage backing up

  1. Stop using water anywhere in the house: no flushing, showers, laundry or dishwasher.
  2. Keep children and pets away from the affected area.
  3. Don’t try to clear a main sewer line with a store-bought auger.

Water heater leaking

  1. Turn the cold-water valve on top of the heater to off.
  2. For a gas heater, set the gas control to Pilot or Off. For electric, switch off its breaker.
  3. Keep clear of the drain valve and pipes: the water inside can be scalding.
